Preseason

Both college and professional athletic seasons are long, and last over half of the year. During this time the athletes are putting their bodies through unimaginable stress and pressure on a day-to-day basis. In addition to the season, the athletes are expected to partake in preseason activities including full-speed games. During this time many injuries occur which effect the remainder of the core season. Preseason games give coaches, viewers, and players an idea of how the team will do in the league. At the same time these games provide an opportunity for players to get injured before the real games, the ones that actually count. Injuries do happen in and out of season, in practice and in games. It just raises the question of how hard the athletes are pushed in the off-season and whether or not it is beneficial in the long-run.

I totally agree Julie, sports seasons are very long, especially basketball and baseball. The pre-season is good for scouting--but also very scary due to the enhanced risk for injury. Athletes work very hard, and hardly get the credit they deserve for providing us with so much entertainment. I like your ideas and thoughts about sports, my AIM screename is maineventplayer, send me a message sometime, it'd be cool to talk more about it.

I agree athletes work very hard but I also know NFL players do not go even close to the intensity that they would go at a regular season game. Their coaches won't allow them to smash each other up at a same team scrimmage. They're contracts are meant for making the franchise the most money during season, which they wont do sitting on the bench injured. Most off season injuries ini the NFL are freak accidents not because a teammate destroyed them.

Unfortunatley its a double edged sword. If you play a preseason and go through a rigorous offseason it could lead to injury or if you sit and play safe it could lead to a slow start to the season and maybe actually more injuries because the body isnt prepared for the drastic change from a light practice to a game.
